What first inspired me to start writing, and why MM romance especially?

Well, what first got me into writing was fanfiction. Back in 2021, I hadn’t even thought about writing it myself. I was just an avid reader, and my online friends — who I’d met a couple of years earlier — pulled me in. At the time, we were all obsessed with Hermitcraft.

(If you don’t know what Hermitcraft is, it’s a YouTube series where a bunch of Minecraft players come together, play in the same world, and share their adventures. Honestly, it’s brilliant.)

From Hermitcraft fanfics, I found myself reading Merlin and Rise of the Guardians ones too. And then one day, my very good friend Wren — who I also played Minecraft with — suggested that I actually try writing some. So I did.

And my very first fanfiction? December 2021. A snowy romance, cuddling up in front of the fire while the snow fell outside. Because obviously I had to pack all my favourite cosy things into that first story. And from there… well, I was hooked. I got so inspired and so encouraged that I just kept going.

Now, why MM romance in particular? Honestly, it just always felt more natural to me. Even when I was only writing fanfiction, it was easier to imagine two guys I loved together in my own little fantasy world than to write the usual male–female romances I’d grown up reading. MM romance opened my eyes in a way nothing else had at the time, and I knew I wanted to keep exploring it.

That’s not to say I haven’t written female–female or male–female pairings. I have.

But MM is the one I always come back to. It feels right. It feels like me. I love creating characters, watching them grow, putting them through hell sometimes — and yes, occasionally things take a dark twist — but ultimately watching them fall in love and earn their happy ending.

Back then, what kept me writing was reading fanfiction and sharing in all those worlds. Now? It’s the way I devour MM romance novels and novellas like I can’t get enough. That’s what keeps the fire burning, keeps me inspired.

So, what inspired me in the first place?

Fanfiction, and the joy of reading it. What keeps me going now? MM romance, pure and simple. And why that genre above all others? Because it feels right, it feels like home — and I’m not planning on stopping any time soon. Maybe one day I’ll branch into other LGBTQ+ stories, but right now? My heart belongs to MM romance.
